FMCSA-Certified Medical Examiner

At Thrive, we offer same-week DOT physical appointments, finish most exams in about 30-45 minutes, and hand you your Medical Examiner’s Certificate before you leave.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

A little prep keeps your visit short and improves your chances of leaving with a full 24-month certification:

  • Government-issued photo ID or driver's license

  • List of current medications with dosages and prescriber names

  • Glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them

  • Last A1C and physician note if you have diabetes

  • Most recent sleep study and CPAP compliance report if applicable

  • Cardiologist clearance letter if you have a heart condition

  • Most recent eye exam if you have monocular vision or a vision waiver

What is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical — officially the U.S. Department of Transportation medical exam — is a health screening required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for anyone operating a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. It confirms a driver is physically and mentally fit to safely operate large trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles.

At Thrive Chiropracitc, the exam is performed by a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. When you pass, you receive a Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC, Form MCSA-5876) — commonly called your "medical card" — valid for up to 24 months.

Who Needs a DOT Physical?

Federal regulations require a current DOT medical card for most commercial drivers. You likely need one if you fit any of these:

  • Commercial truck and bus drivers (CDL Class A, B, and C)

  • Drivers operating vehicles with a GVWR over 10,001 lbs

  • Drivers transporting hazardous materials requiring placards

  • Drivers transporting 9+ passengers for compensation, or 16+ passengers regardless of pay

  • Interstate drivers required to maintain a current DOT medical card

  • New drivers applying for a CDL or commercial endorsement
